Reflection Day 1

I am happy how my part of this day went. I think it prepares better for the project.

Most learners have GitHub accounts, with 2 out of 19 not having done so. It is unfair to people that do have prepared to have to deal with people that have not done so.

  • [ ] Suggest to put URL to Zoom in a private GitHub repository, where learners must reply to an issue to become a team member #224
    • [ ] Consider to first develop a script, instead of a directly working on a package #225

I've taken a look at the retrospect of this same day of previous course:

  • [x] Suggest to add time to the schedule to show the website
  • [x] Suggest to add time to the schedule to show the course project website

Without having taken a look before, I did do these 👍

Retrospect results

During the course, I only glanced at these. Now, some days after the course, I will properly respond to these.

What helped us learn (let us move forward) 2 min

  • the posibility of interact and discuss both between students but also with the teachers

Great.

  • requirements.md, resources for planning and ISOs

Happy to see that my requirements file was useful.

  • The ability to discuss problems with other participants to properly understand that

Due to HackMD, the part of 'that' seems to have been accidentally deleted.

  • Discussions
  • Interactive exercises
  • The discussions

What stopped us from learning (What held us back)

  • The time limit was a factor in discussing and continuing and my knowledge gap

I hope and assume this was not my session.

  • theme on the

Due to HackMD, the part of 'the' seems to have been accidentally deleted.

  • The exercises were challenging, and it could have helped to have to possibility to ask questions or have a chat with one of the teachers during the exercises.
    • [Richel] Was this for all exercises? If not, which session had this the most?
      • The requirements and risks in particular, I think someone wrote before that the guidelines were a bit vague, and it's a bit like a crash course to dive directly into concepts that most people are not really familiar with. [Richel] Thanks!

I agree. The team agreed to provide worked-out answer for exercises, but this session has not done so yet.

What could we do to improve learning (What can we invent) 2 min

  • We could make language in exercises clearer
    • [Richel] Was this for all exercises? If not, which session had this the most?

I hope and assume this is not in my session.

  • To be sure that everybody has a github account, we can change the first exercise (add students to the github projects) as a pre-requirement
    • [Richel] This is a fun idea!

We consider putting the course Zoom room on a private GitHub repository, so that learners are forced to prepare.

  • Do not use this website hackmd, is really messy

We did this directly the day afterwards. Glory to Lars for adapting!

  • Less flexibility with assignments, more structure there... how should the resulting file look like?
    • [Richel] Was this for all assignments? If not, which session had this the most?

I hope and assume this is not in my session.

  • HackMD - great idea, less ideal execution

We switched tools directly the day afterwards. Glory to Lars for adapting!

  • Pick the most crucial exercises, although in retrospect all of them are quite important to learn development.

I wish there was more of a guideline in here. I agree that all exercises must be useful.

  • Shorter but meaningful exercises,
    • [Richel] Was this for all exercises? If not, which session had this the most?

I hope and assume this is not in my session.

  • Going through the results after the time allocated
    • [Richel] Was this for all exercises? If not, which session had this the most?

This may be for my session. If it is, I agree that my Feedback phase is weakest and I will try to do better.

  • Don't use this current tool for collecting feedback, it's very chaotic to use.

We switched tools directly the day afterwards. Glory to Lars for adapting!

  • Going through example answers in the end of each exercise
    • [Richel] Was this needed for all exercises? If not, which session had this the most?

This may be for my session. If it is, I agree that my Feedback phase is weakest and I will try to do better.

  • Use lecture aids such as powerpoint or similar, instead of the more off-the-cuff lecture style.
    • [Richel] Would you recommend this for all sessions? If not, which session could benefit the most/least?

I hope and assume this is not in my session.

What will we do

  • [/] Lars will add example answer to his exercises

Unknown how relevant this is, as he is leaving the course teacher team (but would be open to be a guest lecturer).

  • Lars will try another tool than HackMD and add a page about Retrospect

He did! Glory to Lars!

  • Richel will ask about which lectures should have a more powerpointy lecture style, so I can improve if it applies to me

I did not ask, as I forgot.

  • Richel will discuss the specificity of Retrospects: the more specific (who? which session?) the better!

I did so.

Confidence Report

I ignore these, as I feel these are close to useless. I asked these to be removed every day since and they were.

My conclusion

I conclude this after the course:

  • Taking the time to go through the course website and the learners' project paid off
