2026-02-09¶
I am late reflecting, as I needed to go back to work for teaching on Friday. I did make some notes.
The group was too big. I was unsure about colleague feeling comfortable to help. Discussed with colleague. She is super willing to help. Fun!
- [ ] Ask colleague(s) for help next taking care of the breakout room
Due to the teaching on Monday, where I did not dare to do a Prior, in this course I do so. It felt The Right Thing To Do.
On Monday, I had tried out another way to distribute learners over the Zoom rooms. It did not work out well. This time, I wanted to go back to distributing the learners over rooms manually. This worked out great.
- [ ] Remember: manually distribute learners over breakout rooms
sed could use more time. However, I am happy with it: grep is
by far the more important one.
- [ ] Add picture for sed, similar to grep
Working together with my colleague went well, as per usual. It felt nice to be in an experienced team.
Using Hamlet was appreciated by the learners.
Even though I mentioned that in grep exercises 1 and 2, one should not care
about the regular expression until exercise 3, the learners asked my so anyway.
- [ ] grep exercises before 3: mention again and again: exercise 3 explains the pattern
There was a learner I met in a breakout rooms. She struggles with ADHD. She claimed that ‘this way of teaching’ (I was unable to get her to clarify what ‘this way’ was) was the worst for her. I ask how I could help (reply: something like ‘not much’). I wished her luck with her ADHD (reply: something like ‘thanks’). I let her do whatever she thought was best.
Evaluation results¶

Course ratings: useless to me.

All confidences: a success score of 78% seems good enough to me.

Average confidence per question: I am happy with the pattern I see.

Confidences per question: I am happy with the pattern I see.

Course recommend: I am happy with the pattern I see. I can imagine the ADHD learner picking ‘Not sure.
Pace¶
- Nice, good to follow
Great!
- fine
Fine :-)
- I think it was a good pacing. Sometimes a little more time might have been needed for the exercises.
I think this does not apply to my session.
- great! I managed to follow along
- Most of lectures were rather fast, and not much time for exercises
I think this does not apply to my session.
- The exercises are good to be hands on, I think this helps set the pace in a more authentic manner.
I agree.
- Good pace, but maybe too intense for one day
I agree. Usually it is two days.
- It was good. I didn’t finish all the exercises on on the time given but I didn’t feel lost because of it and I know I can do them another time
Great!
- Generally good pace, sometimes a bit too fast (ex. 3min to try things yourself)
I think this does not apply to my session.
- fine
Fine :-)
- The pace was ok if one have some experience, otherwise probably a bit fast.
I regret this: I think we should slow down. I hope this does not apply to my session.
Other comments¶
- I think all exercises should have solutions and the solutions should be more detailed. This would help me most understanding the topics.
I have that :-)
- Both teachers today were very nice and educational. I feel like I learned a lot.
Yay!
- The course materials are very good, though lectures were rather fast, but one can go back to the course materials
I hope this does not apply to me…?
- There are lots of items, I don’t think it is fair that we expect all the students to understand EVERYTHING at the HIGHEST level. There are already material available that we can study in more detail. If NAISS every wants to make a podcast to share the knowledge of the talented members it has, Richel is awesome. He makes this distant course really engaging and fun, so more of the Linux commands stays in our heads!
Thanks for the understanding and compliment!
- I’m happy with the content of the course, adequate to beginners. I’m also satisfy with the performance of the teachers. I would suggest more time for doing exercises.
I hope that this does not apply to me.
- I really like Richel’s energy and personal attention. It is very easy to follow and understand. Thank you both for the course.
Great!
- Super great material including good practices, downloadable via Github. Richel did a great job with keeping people engaged. I liked his questions in the beginning of each session! I know its hard to keep participants engaged, they’re often too shy!
I am happy that the Prior is appreciated.
- The material was very useful although it was so detailed that it wasn’t really necessary to follow the course after having gone through the material in my own time. Having Q&A documents was great, I’ll remember that for my own teaching! Thanks Richèl for spreading a good vibe!
I hope my materials were not too detailed …? Maybe the sed session
is. Let’s simplify it!
- [ ] Simplify
sed
Thanks for appreciating my vibe.
- A very good and wide‑ranging course in Linux. The teaching style—with questions, discussions, and Zoom breakout rooms—was new to me but also fun. It kept the audience engaged and focused throughout.
Great to hear!
